Nigerias Lookman Named African Footballer of the Year
On December 16, 2024, Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman was honored as the African Footballer of the Year by the Confederation of African Football. The 27-year-old, playing for Italy's Atalanta, delivered a standout performance in the Europa League final, scoring a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen. His contributions were pivotal in leading Atalanta to European glory.
In addition to his club success, Lookman played a significant role in Nigeria's journey to the Africa Cup of Nations final in Ivory Coast, netting three goals during the tournament. His consistent form has been evident, with 17 goals for Atalanta last season and 11 already in the current campaign.
Reflecting on his achievement, Lookman expressed gratitude, stating, "This award is a blessing, to be recognized as the best player in Africa is something incredible." He also recalled overcoming challenges in his career, adding, "Four years ago my career felt down but now I'm here as the best player in Africa. Don't let your failures stop your dreams."
Lookman becomes the seventh Nigerian to receive this prestigious award, joining the ranks of football legends such as Nwankwo Kanu, Emmanuel Amunike, Victor Ikpeba, and Rashidi Yekini. His recognition underscores Nigeria's rich football heritage and the nation's ongoing contribution to the sport on the African continent.
This accolade not only highlights Lookman's individual talent but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring footballers across Africa, demonstrating that perseverance and dedication can lead to remarkable achievements.
