Nigeria to Auction Undeveloped Oil and Gas Blocks in 2025

The Nigerian government has announced plans to auction undeveloped oil and gas blocks in 2025, focusing on natural gas development to support the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. This auction will mark the third since the passage of the oil industry reform law in 2021, aimed at increasing oil production and supporting government expenditure.

Gbenga Komolafe, the head of Nigeria’s Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), stated, “This licensing round is more than a commercial endeavor; it is a bold declaration that Nigeria is open for business.” He also added that the offshore oil block auction in February had concluded, with successful bidders set to receive their licenses in the coming months.

This auction is expected to attract investments from both local and international energy companies and will contribute to Nigeria’s economy by increasing export revenues and creating jobs.

However, the development of natural resources still faces several challenges, including concerns over environmental impacts and local community involvement. The Nigerian government is committed to addressing these challenges by implementing measures that focus on sustainable development and community participation in decisions regarding the use of natural resources.

The auction represents a significant step in Nigeria's energy sector development and is expected to have a major impact on the country's economy and society in the future.
